You Are the One I Love

Blood flows
Eyes close
The Father’s dying Son
Scourged and broken
My God, what have I done?

You are the One I love
Wounded for my transgressions
How great the price of Your sacrifice
You are the One I love

Take me
Break me
Make me Yours alone
Hide me in Your mercy
The Cross will lead me home

You are the One I love
Wounded for my transgressions
How great the price of Your sacrifice
You are the One
(I love You for your humble birth…)

I love You for your humble birth
Though you were God, You came to earth
I love you for Gethsemane
For sweating blood in agony

I love you for the brutal whips
The words of grace upon your lips
I love you for the crown of thorns
For sorrows I will never know

For all I cannot understand
The nails that pierced Your feet and hands
And for this holy mystery:
The wonders of Your love for me
(and You are the One…)

Blood flows
Eyes close
So he delivered him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and he went out, bearing his own cross, to the place called The Place of a Skull, which in Aramaic is called Golgotha. There they crucified him, and with him two others, one on either side, and Jesus between them (John 19:16-18) / After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, 'It is finished!' And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (John 19:28-30)

The Father’s dying Son
Scourged and broken
Then he [Pilate] released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, delivered him to be crucified. (Matthew 27:26) / And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)

My God, what have I done?
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to deliver us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory forever and ever. Amen. (Galatians 1:3-5)

You are the One I love Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory (1 Peter 1:8)

Wounded for my transgressions
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5)

How great the price of Your sacrifice
You are the One I love
…you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. (1 Peter 1:18-19)

Take me When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, “Lord, what about this man?” Jesus said to him, “If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!” (John 21:21-22) / As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:14-16)

Break me
I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. (Romans 12:1)

Make me Yours alone
For I feel a divine jealousy for you, since I betrothed you to one husband, to present you as a pure virgin to Christ. But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. (2 Corinthians 11:2-3)

Hide me in Your mercy The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)

The Cross will lead me home
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done. (Matthew 16:24-27)

You are the One I love We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

I love You for your humble birth
Though you were God, You came to earth
though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself (Philippians 2:6-8)

I love you for Gethsemane
And they went to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to his disciples, “Sit here while I pray.” And he took with him Peter and James and John, and began to be greatly distressed and troubled. And he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death. Remain here and watch.” And going a little farther, he fell on the ground and prayed that, if it were possible, the hour might pass from him. And he said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible for you. Remove this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” (Mark 14:32-36)

For sweating blood in agony
And he withdrew from them about a stone's throw, and knelt down and prayed, saying, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” And there appeared to him an angel from heaven, strengthening him. And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. (Luke 22:41-44)

I love you for the brutal whips
Then Pilate took Jesus and flogged him. (John 19:1)

The words of grace upon your lips
And Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And they cast lots to divide his garments. (Luke 23:34)

I love you for the crown of thorns
and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head and put a reed in his right hand. And kneeling before him, they mocked him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Matthew 27:29)

For sorrows I will never know
For all I cannot understand
and at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lema sabachthani?” which means, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Mark 15:34)
Only the Triune God could ever know the unspeakable suffering within the Godhead for God the Father to forsake God the Son. It is simply not ours to know or ever fully comprehend. Jesus was quoting Psalm 22 which He very likely had memorized. So the ending of Psalm 22 is especially powerful to remember that on the Cross he was thinking of you, one of the billions yet unborn!: “Posterity shall serve him; it shall be told of the Lord to the coming generation; they shall come and proclaim his righteousness to a people yet unborn, that he has done it.” (Psalm 22:30-31)

The nails that pierced Your feet and hands
So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails, and place my finger into the mark of the nails, and place my hand into his side, I will never believe.” (John 20:25)
*
The Bible doesn’t specifically mention nail(s) through Jesus’ feet. The feet of the crucified were sometimes tightly bound, but the use of nails was a grisly and historically attested part of a typical Roman crucifixion and likely to have been a part of our Savior’s physical suffering.

And for this holy mystery:
The wonders of Your love for me
For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:7-8)

Grace

Grace is not grace if I deserve it
Grace is not grace if I could earn it
Grace is not grace if I depend
On anything but Your righteousness

Grace is the love that loved me first
Grace is the blood that took my curse
Grace is the way to everlasting life
Grace comes through Jesus Christ

Grace is not grace if nothing changes
Grace is not grace but for Your kindness
Grace is not grace if not grace alone
Only the Cross will lead me home

All my affection and all my devotion
All I have given and all I’ve forsaken
All my good works
Could never be good enough

Grace is not grace if I deserve it But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace. (Romans 11:6)

Grace is not grace if I could earn it
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 6:23)

Grace is not grace if I depend
On anything but Your righteousness
For if, because of one man's trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ. (Romans 5:17)

Grace is the love that loved me first We love because he first loved us. (1 John 4:19)

Grace is the blood that took my curse
To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 1:5-6) / Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— (Galatians 3:13)

Grace is the way to everlasting life
so that, as sin reigned in death, grace also might reign through righteousness leading to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. (Romans 5:21)

Grace comes through Jesus Christ
For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. (John 1:17)

Grace is not grace if nothing changes
For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age, waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to purify for himself a people for his own possession who are zealous for good works. (Titus 2:11-14)

Grace is not grace but for Your kindness
and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, (Ephesians 2:6-8)

Grace is not grace if not grace alone
For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast. For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. (Ephesians 2:8-10)

Only the Cross will lead me home
Christ suffered for our sins once for all time. He never sinned, but he died for sinners to bring you safely home to God. (1 Peter 3:18)

All my affection and all my devotion For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin…For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. (Romans 3:20,28)

All I have given and all I’ve forsaken
He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, (Titus 3:5)

All my good works
Who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began (2 Timothy 1:9)

Could never be good enough
For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it. (James 2:10) / And are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, (Romans 3:24)

Freedom is Slavery to Christ

Once I was bound in my sin
Darkness without and within
The freedom I felt was a lie
Sin is the freedom to die

(But) You raise the dead to life
Out of the darkness
And into Your light
For You I live
No longer I
Freedom is slavery to Christ (2x)

To You I will always belong
Redemption, the theme of my song
Bought with Your own precious blood
Jesus, my Lord and my God

It is for freedom You set me free
Not as a slave to depravity
But for Your glorious liberty
I in Christ and Christ in me (2x)

Once I was bound in my sin
Darkness without and within
The eye is the lamp of the body. So, if your eye is healthy, your whole body will be full of light, but if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light in you is darkness, how great is the darkness! (Matthew 6:22-23)

The freedom I felt was a lie
They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first. (2 Peter 2:19-20)

Sin is the freedom to die
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? (Romans 6:16)

(But) You raise the dead to life But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, (Ephesians 2:4-6) / in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. (Romans 4:17)

Out of the darkness
And into Your light
For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. (2 Corinthians 4:6) / But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. (1 Peter 2:9)

For You I live
No longer I
For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord's. (Romans 14:8) / By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents with Isaac and Jacob, heirs with him of the same promise. (Hebrews 11:9)

Freedom is slavery to Christ What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. (Romans 6:15-18)

Freedom is slavery to Christ For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. (Galatians 5:13)

To You I will always belong For this very night there stood before me an angel of the God to whom I belong and whom I worship (Acts 27:23) / Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. (Psalm 100:3) / Beloved, we are God's children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. (1 John 3:2)

Redemption, the theme of my song
In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, (Ephesians 1:7)

Bought with Your own precious blood
knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot (1 Peter 1:18-19)

Jesus, my Lord and my God
Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.” Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” (John 20:27-28)

It is for freedom You set me free For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery. (Galatians 5:1)

Not as a slave to depravity
They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. (2 Peter 2:19)

But for Your glorious liberty
So speak and so act as those who are to be judged under the law of liberty. (James 2:12)

I in Christ and Christ in me (2x)
There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. (Romans 8:1) /Christ in you, the hope of glory. (Colossians 1:27)
