Day 01 of 21
Life from the True Vine
Scripture King James Version
1 I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
2 Every branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.
3 Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you.
4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.
5 I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
6 If a man abide not in me, he is cast forth as a branch, and is withered; and men gather them, and cast them into the fire, and they are burned.
7 If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
8 Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit; so shall ye be my disciples.
Devotional thought
Jesus begins with a relationship: He is the Vine, and His disciples are the branches. Their fruitfulness depends upon the life they receive from Him. Even the Father's pruning belongs to His care for a living branch. As this journey begins, let Christ's words settle your understanding of growth: you need Him continually, in ordinary moments as surely as in moments of crisis.
Today's song gathers Jesus' declarations about who He is. Listen especially for the picture of the Vine and the branch. Bring Him one part of your life where you have been relying on your own strength. Remain attentive to His words, ask for His help, and obey what He makes clear. The fruit He seeks grows from a life that stays near its source.
Take it to heartWhere do you need to depend upon Christ more consciously as these twenty-one days begin?
A prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the true Vine, and I need the life that comes from You. Keep Your words alive in my heart. Help me receive the Father's care, trust You in my weakness, and bear fruit that brings Him glory. Amen.
Carry this with you
6 As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him:
7 Rooted and built up in him, and stablished in the faith, as ye have been taught, abounding therein with thanksgiving.
