LYRICS

Not because of our goodness
Not for works we have done
Not because of our righteousness
Not for merit in us

But because of Your mercy
Because of Your love
Because of Your kindness, Lord, we come

In the name of God our Father
In the name of Christ the Son
In the name of the Holy Spirit
Holy, Holy, Holy One

In the name of God our Father
In the name of Christ the Son
In the name of the Holy Spirit
Only by Your grace we come

Lord, we look to Your passion
Lord, we look to the Cross
For while we were yet sinners
You bled and died for us

Because of Your mercy
Because of Your love
Because of Your kindness, Lord, we come

BRIDGE:
We will trust in the Name
Of the LORD forever
We will trust in the Name
Of the LORD forevermore

THE WORD IN THE WORDS

Not because of our goodness

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5)

Not for works we have done

...God, who saved us and called us to a holy calling, not because of our works but because of his own purpose and grace, which he gave us in Christ Jesus before the ages began, and which now has been manifested through the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel (2 Timothy 1:8-10)  /  ...though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad—in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of him who calls (Romans 9:11)

Not because of our righteousness

Do not say in your heart...‘It is because of my righteousness that the Lord has brought me in to possess this land,’...Not because of your righteousness or the uprightness of your heart are you going in to possess their land...Know, therefore, that the Lord your God is not giving you this good land to possess because of your righteousness (Deuteronomy 9:4-6)

Not for merit in us

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:8-10)

But because of Your mercy

He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit (Titus 3:5)  /  O my God, incline your ear and hear...For we do not present our pleas before you because of our righteousness, but because of your great mercy. (Daniel 9:18)

Because of Your love

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16)  /  Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. (Revelation 1:5-6)

Because of Your kindness, Lord, we come

But when the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by his grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life (Titus 3:4-7)

In the name of God our Father
In the name of Christ the Son
In the name of the Holy Spirit

And Jesus came and said to them, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20)  /  The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all. (2 Corinthians 13:14

Holy, Holy, Holy One

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!” (Isaiah 6:3)  /  “Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!” (Revelation 4:8)

In the name of God our Father
In the name of Christ the Son
In the name of the Holy Spirit

...that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom (Ephesians 1:17)  /  And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” (Galatians 4:6)

Only by Your grace we come

But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:10)  /  For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.  (Ephesians 2:8-9)  /  Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Lord, we look to Your passion

(Though "passion" has several modern definitions, historically - and in this song - it refers to the suffering Jesus endured for us). For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God (1 Peter 3:18)  /  For because he himself has suffered when tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. (Hebrews 2:18)  /  For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. (1 Peter 2:21)

Lord, we look to the Cross

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted. (Hebrews 12:1-3)

For while we were yet sinners
You bled and died for us

God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)

DEVOTIONAL

“If any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.” 1 John 2:1

“If any man sin, we have an advocate.” Yes, though we sin, we have him still. John does not say, “If any man sin he has forfeited his advocate,” but “we have an advocate,” sinners though we are. All the sin that a believer ever did, or can be allowed to commit, cannot destroy his interest in the Lord Jesus Christ, as his advocate. The name here given to our Lord is suggestive. “Jesus.” Ah! then he is an advocate such as we need, for Jesus is the name of one whose business and delight it is to save. “They shall call his name Jesus, for he shall save his people from their sins.” His sweetest name implies his success. Next, it is “Jesus Christ”—Christos, the anointed. This shows his authority to plead. The Christ has a right to plead, for he is the Father’s own appointed advocate and elected priest. If he were of our choosing he might fail, but if God hath laid help upon one that is mighty, we may safely lay our trouble where God has laid his help. He is Christ, and therefore authorized; he is Christ, and therefore qualified, for the anointing has fully fitted him for his work. He can plead so as to move the heart of God and prevail. What words of tenderness, what sentences of persuasion will the anointed use when he stands up to plead for me! One more letter of his name remains, “Jesus Christ the righteous.” This is not only his character but his plea. It is his character, and if the Righteous One be my advocate, then my cause is good, or he would not have espoused it. It is his plea, for he meets the charge of unrighteousness against me by the plea that he is righteous. He declares himself my substitute and puts his obedience to my account. My soul, you have a friend well fitted to be your advocate, he cannot but succeed; leave yourself entirely in his hands.

“We will be glad and rejoice in You.” Song of Solomon 1:4

We will be glad and rejoice in You. We will not open the gates of the year to the dolorous notes of the sad trombone, but to the sweet strains of the harp of joy, and the high sounding cymbals of gladness. “O come, let us sing unto the Lord: let us make a joyful noise unto the rock of our salvation.” We, the called and faithful and chosen, we will drive away our griefs, and set up our banners of confidence in the name of God. Let others lament over their troubles, we who have the sweetening tree to cast into Marah’s bitter pool, with joy will magnify the Lord. Eternal Spirit, our effectual Comforter, we who are the temples in which you dwell, will never cease from adoring and blessing the name of Jesus. We will, we are resolved about it, Jesus must have the crown of our heart’s delight; we will not dishonour our Bridegroom by mourning in his presence. We are ordained to be the minstrels of the skies, let us rehearse our everlasting anthem before we sing it in the halls of the New Jerusalem. We will be glad and rejoice: two words with one sense, double joy, blessedness upon blessedness. Need there be any limit to our rejoicing in the Lord even now? Do not men of grace find their Lord to be camphire and spikenard, calamus and cinnamon even now, and what better fragrance have they in heaven itself? We will be glad and rejoice in You. That last word is the meat in the dish, the kernel of the nut, the soul of the text. What heavens are laid up in Jesus! What rivers of infinite bliss have their source, aye, and every drop of their fullness in him! Since, O sweet Lord Jesus, you art the present portion of Your people, favour us this year with such a sense of Your preciousness, that from its first to its last day we may be glad and rejoice in You. Let January open with joy in the Lord, and December close with gladness in Jesus. - Charles Spurgeon
